The Beach Music industry has taken another hit with the loss of Jim Bowers. Posts on social media began circulating about the loss of Jim and the love from so many friends is clear to see how much he was loved. An event has been planned in his honor and was shared in a post by Sharon Fuquay Fries that reads; "A “Big Party” will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 1 pm Summerville Country Club, 400 Country Club Blvd, Summerville, SC 29483. Come as you are (flip flops, hats, and Gamecock wear are welcome😘)and enjoy music, food, fun, family, and friends. We expect a lot of memories, and storytelling, AND I’m willing to bet there will be dancing! Hope to see you there, and THANK YOU all, for the tremendous outpouring of support for his family❤️"
Once an obituary has been posted we will share that information with you here. You can read many of the posts below from his friends on Facebook by visiting his page. Our prayers to his family and friends and the Beach Music community.

HIP POCKET Dustin York
In a Facebook post on December 10, 2019, Dustin York announced he would be leaving Hip Pocket and the prior weekend show was his last appearance with the band. He went on to thank the band members and fans and said “I’m sad to see it end, I’m also excited to see what the future holds”. We’d like to wish Dustin all of the best in his future endeavors. We had the opportunity to see the band perform during the 2019 CBMA weekend and they put on a great show.
The Embers featuring Craig Woolard Christmas Show at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre
Is there a city the Embers’ Christmas show didn’t see in 2019? On December 12, 2019 we were able to catch the show in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. We must say, the star of the 2019 Christmas show had to be Julio Eubanks with his rendition of Feliz Navidad as seen in Bob Blair’s video posted on December 17, 2019. If you missed your opportunity to see it live, you missed out on a great show!
BAND OF OZ Aubrey’s Christmas Bash
On December 20, 2019 we attended Aubrey’s Christmas Bash at the Old Towne Civic Center in Petersburg, Virginia. Photos and videos from this event will be posted shortly on our website. As to be expected, they put on a fantastic show in BOZ fashion. With the addition of Chris and Dustin they’ve really added another dimension to an already stellar lineup of musicians and performers. It was great talking to the guys and we appreciate the positive comments regarding Flip Flop Live and you can look for more giveaways coming soon from KHP Music and Flip Flop Live.
STEVE OWENS AND SUMMERTIME
We were invited to attend a private event with Steve Owens and Summertime in Lawrenceville, Virginia on December 21, 2019. The band didn’t disappoint as they kept the dance floor full all evening and our very Andy Lucy had the chance to show off his drumming skills on “Mustang Sally”. Videos from the event have been posted on our website. Steve and the guys performed their newest single, You can’t fall up (You Just Fall Down) that’s included on the Party for a Lifetime CD. If you haven’t heard their version of this song, call your favorite DJ and request it. We had the chance to enjoy dinner with the band thanks to the generous hosts, Daven and Lynn Lucy of Virginia Pallets and Wood, LLC. Thank you for inviting Flip Flop Live to take part of this event.
AMMON’S ALLSTARS PERFORM
On Sunday, December 29, 2019 we travelled to “The Banque” in Norfolk, Virginia where Ammon’s Allstars performed for an early New Year’s Eve event at the club. If you’re ever In the area we highly recommend you visit this venue. It has a large dance floor, three bars, delicious food and the staff is very attentive. The band performed a wide variety of Beach, Motown and of course the Rhondel’s hits. Bassist for the group is Don Quisenberry who was inducted into the CBMA Hall of Fame during the 2019 awards weekend in N. Myrtle Beach and playing in Ammon’s place was Wilton “The Animal” Ferguson who is the current drummer for the Feature Attraction Band (FAB). They put on a great show and it featured five horns, a video compilation can be found on the video page of our website.

On December 30, 2019, Billy Darr (current performing bassist) provided an update on Tuff. Billy said “he looks great and is doing well”. He also said that Tuff will be back with the band soon. If you’d like to see the photo and post by Billy, it can be found on our website along with the link to make a donation to help offset medical expenses.

It's time to celebrate the ones we allow in our homes daily, during our travels and those who support the industry we love. Beach Music is comprised of a diverse group of DJs that keep our favorite songs alive and for that we say thank you. They bring us the hottest new tracks while at the same time bringing back old memories with the classic music we cherish. Share and give your favorite DJs a shoutout today on their social media pages or give them a call on-air and thank them for everything they do. Without the DJs and stations many artists and/or bands wouldn't be able to do what they love every single day and they're an extremely important part of every genre of music, however none can compare to the ones we have in Beach Music. Love to all of our DJ friends and thank you from Flip Flop Live!
Each year National Disc Jockey Day recognizes the DJs playing the music and spinning the records. The observance takes place annually on January 20th.
A disc jockey, or DJ for short, is a person who plays recorded music either on the radio or at a club or event.
The first disc jockey was an experiment on the airwaves. In 1909, sixteen-year-old Ray Newby was a student under the supervision of Charles “Doc” Herrold at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. He played the first records over the airwaves before the word disc jockey even existed.
What started as an experiment from the Garden City Bank Building where the college was located in San Fernando, California, was soon being replicated by radio broadcasters across the country. Initially, Newby primarily broadcast his news, music, and entertainment live.
It wasn’t until 25 years later that radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term disc jockey.
Today, contemporary DJs play music from vinyl to digital. Regardless of the medium they use, the term disc jockey still applies.
Hip-hop DJs became popular in the late 70s and 80s using multiple turntables and using the turntables themselves as an instrument to alter the music. Mobile DJs often act as the master of ceremonies at events or parties directing the evening’s activities.
Lester “Paul” Craver, 71, died January 14, 2020 at MUSC, Charleston, SC.
Born on August 30, 1948 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of Lester Paul and Ruby L. Brandon Craver, Sr.
The music bug bit Paul Craver at an early age. The Ripete Records recording artist and Greensboro, NC, native entered high school - trumpet in tow - and quickly joined the school band. After graduation, he took his place in the United States Navy as a Signalman and served in Vietnam.
In 1972, he joined a group called Medium Cool and from his very first gig with the group, no one could keep him away from the microphone. He knew from that point that he had found his calling. After reconstructing the O’Kaysions, now known as the Fabulous Kays, Paul moved to Columbia, SC, in 1981, where he teamed up with Willis Blume to form Shagtime, a band that produced "Mr. Beach." Paul sang lead vocals on the project, and the single became a defining milestone in his career. Paul was a part of several bands over the years, but in 1993, the Men of Distinction band was formed. He sang lead vocals for them and they earned four Carolina Beach Music Awards. Paul has a history of his own in terms of the CBMA with a string of nominations and a good number of wins. He was a 2002 inductee into the Beach Music Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received Smoothie of the Year for "Emperor of My Baby's Heart," released on KHP Music's Keep On Shaggin compilation. In March 2008, Paul retired from the Men of Distinction and devoted more time to his solo career and deejay opportunities. In 2016, he was inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame. Since then, he has had many incredible opportunities to share his musical love and talent with others. In 2011, he was invited to sing in Belgium and was loved by all the people. During a University of South Carolina home game, he performed to the many fans in attendance.
He was the owner/operator of Craver Tile Co. and many will remember the hilarious radio commercials he and Gail made. He loved this country and the veterans that have helped keep us free. He had a great affinity for golf and his golf buddies. He was always on the go, but found the time to spend with Gail and his family. They were the most important to him.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Gail Angel Craver; sons Tripp Craver (Jenny), John Stephenson (Amber); daughters, Dotte Watts and Angela Stephenson; and nine grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Chris Craver, and brothers Bobby and Frank.
A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veterans’ Welcome Home & Resource Center, 421 State Hwy 57 South, Little River, SC 29566.

Dotte Watts posted information on her dad Paul Craver and step-mom Gail. Paul is a longtime Beach Music industry veteran DJ and singer. If you're able to help out momentarily please click here.
Dotte's post:
As most of you know, back in August my Daddy went for a regular routine checkup at the VA and they did an X-ray on his chest and found 2 aneurysms in his heart. The next day he went to Duke university in NC and had open heart Surgery as well as a double bypass. He ended up staying in the hospital for almost one month and since then he has been going downhill. One of the bypasses failed. Now he is battling low oxygen and blood pressure as well as fluid continuously building up. My step mom Gail has been by his side 24/7 taking care of him. He has been in and out of hospitals at least 10 times since. This past Saturday night he was rushed to McLeod Hospital in North Myrtle Beach and then Sunday was rushed to MUSC. He is still in ICU at MUSC and Charleston is over two hours away from their hometown of Little River, SC, so I’m trying to raise some money to help my Stepmom with food and lodging expenses as she is having to stay in a hotel close by every night. Even if you can’t help financially, can you please pray for them? The Bible says where two or more are gathered, there I will be! Thank you for all of your prayers. They mean so much through this difficult time and I know that if my Daddy could say thank you he would!!!

Happy New Year to all of our friends! We hate to see 2019 go because it was such an eventful year for us here at Flip Flop Live. We began this journey earlier in the year and the success and support that we've recieved has been much more than ever expected. To put the cherry on top the CBMA members awarded us the 2019 Michael Branch Award. Happy New Year and thank you for everything this past year and we can't wait to see what's in store for Flip Flop Live and Beach Music!
