Happy National Radio Day
Thursday, August 20 2020

August 20, 2020

Happy National Radio Day from Flip Flop Live!
While it's not a nationally sanctioned holiday, we love to celebrate the invention of the radio on August 20th each year. What would the world be like without Radio? It brought us closer together as a nation including use in government operations, news and music distribution and many other uses that are widely used today. Celebrate radio each and every day because we certainly do!

Think about the careers that were made possible throughout the radio industry and what about the fame some achieved in the early days while families sat around listening to radio programs. Not only should we celebrate the radio itself but support your favorite DJ's, the stations and the sponsors who help keep these stations on the air. You can't have one without the other and these talented guys and gals keep the music playing twenty-four hours a day for our enjoyment. Certainly technology has advanced where we now have satellite and internet radio and while they may not transmit across the same airwaves, they still derive from the original radio and they have become part of our everyday lives.

Thank you to all of our DJ friends, station owners and sponsors! If you'd like to discover new shows, stations and DJ's be sure to check the radio schedule on our homepage and also our DJ and Radio listing pages and connect with new friends.

SOS Fall Migration Canceled
Monday, August 03 2020

The following information was shared on the Society of Stranders website. SOS logo property of the Society of Stranders

August 3, 2020

   Fellow Stranders,
It is with great disappointment the ACSC/SOS Board announces Fall Migration 2020 is officially cancelled. All reasoning and thought could not find a way to go forward with our SOS event. Each SOS member’s safety and health are first and foremost in making this decision.

On August 3rd the two SOS clubs, Fat Harold’s and Ducks, will re-open after being closed. The Governor’s new mandate states that these establishments (bars/restaurants) can only have 50% occupancy bases on fire marshals rating. No occupant standing or congregating in or at the bar area. Masks are required when entering the club / restaurant, must maintain safe distancing. Dancing is allowed but must wear mask and maintain social distancing. These are just a few of the restrictions that would be impossible to control at an SOS event.

Horry County is still a hot spot for the covid-19 virus. If SOS took place in September, there would be no way to control the crowd or the conditions around the events of Fall Migration. The decision made by the ACSC/SOS Board was based on your personal safety and health.
In appreciation of our SOS members, SOS will honor your 2020 SOS membership card through February 1, 2021. If you purchased a 2020 SOS membership earlier in the year, thank you. The SOS membership cards will be on sale through all the usual outlets.

Any questions can be answered by
any of the ACSC/SOS Board Members.

Monday, July 20 2020

July 20, 2020

Saturday, July 18, 2020 we received the sad news of the passing of legendary DJ, Gary Bass. He will be missed by so many that he's touched through friendships as well as throughout his music career. It wasn't often the we'd visit Fat Harold's and not see him in one of the DJ booths or somewhere in the building. Full of life and a lot of fun we'll certainly miss the great conversations with Gary. Our prayers go out to his family during this time along with the Beach Music Community. For service information, to read his obituary and to send your condolences to the family, please use the link below!

SUMMERFIELD - Gary Franklin Bass, lll, 69, passed away unexpectedly July 18, 2020. Gary was born in Columbia, SC, on August 29, 1950, the son of Gary F. Bass, Jr., and Gladys Lewis Bass.

Gary retired from Arthur J. Gallagher Insurance Company with 34 years of service, but his true passion was Carolina Beach Music. Gary is a true “Legend” who promoted beach music and the shag dance with his heart and soul. Gary was the owner of Beach Party Sounds. The DJ business gave him the pleasure of playing all over the country, sharing his talents. He has been the house DJ for Fat Harold’s Beach Club from 1985 until his passing. He loved Fat Harold and the staff like family. Gary loved to DJ, record and entertain. In 1989, he recorded his greatest hit, “Soothe Me”. He was very dedicated to Camp Kemo, a camp for children with cancer and blood disorders. For the past 30 years, he volunteered his time and talents to raise money for these children.

Gary loved his family, loved life and enjoyed a good laugh. He never met a stranger, making friends for a lifetime. Some of his greatest accomplishments include, being an Eagle Scout, a member of the DJ Hall of Fame, CBMA Club and Mobile DJ 7 years, and being inducted into the Beach Music Hall of Fame. Gary is a member of Greenbrier United Methodist Church, Winnsboro, SC and attended Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC. Gary is survived by the love of his life, Robin Bass. Brother, Lunceford Bass, Sr. and wife, Diane, nephews, Lunce Bass, Jr., DJ Bass, and wife Mimi and his unborn great nephew, and a loving extended family and friends.

Life will not be the same without you, Gary, but great memories of our time together will live forever.
Due to COVID restrictions, a memorial service for the family will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, July 21, 2020, at Muir’s Chapel United Methodist Church, Greensboro, NC. Service will be conducted by Reverend Brenda Newman and Reverend Jeremy Pegram.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 22, 2020, at 11 am, at the Greenbrier United Methodist Church Cemetery, Winnsboro, SC. Service will be conducted by Reverend Walt Ballenger. Judy's House of Oldies
Tuesday, July 14 2020

July 13, 2020 - Photo property of Judy's House of Oldies

N. Myrtle Beach and the Beach Music world will soon say goodbye to a landmark. "Judy’s House of Oldies of North Myrtle Beach opened in 1987, and was formerly known as the Beach Music Center, which opened in 1963 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina." They're family owned and they specialize in oldies, Carolina Beach Music along with rhythm and blues. Their website states: "Most of our demand is for shag dance music and west coast dancing, as well as east coast dance music."

As you will remember back in April of 2019 we lost Judy Collins,  founding member of the OD Shag Club and  co-owner of Judy's House of Oldies which was a big loss to the Beach Music community. We'll certainly miss our visits to the store during our trips to N. Myrtle Beach but we wish everyone all the best because this is truly the ending of an era. Below you will find the official Facebook post from owner Jeannie Elmore announcing the closure.

You can visit their website to purchase but we also recommend calling or visiting to inquire about availability. Store information can be found below.

 Covid-19 / The 2020 CBMA's
Wednesday, July 08 2020

July 8, 2020

In three emails shared earlier today, they've released information on Cammy weekend in November along with an extended nomination window due to COVID-19.  We have information from all of the messages below. **Please note** as of right now (Wednesday, July 8, 2020), Cammy weekend HAS NOT been canceled. They're not making the determination at this time but they do plan on announcing the plans during the nomination announcement show that will broadcast live on 94.9 FM The Surf on Friday, September 25, 2020. Stay tuned for more updates!  Also if you haven't joined the academy yet, you can visit this link for more information.

Covid-19 / The 2020 CBMA's

Due to the Covid19 pandemic, it does not look like the 2020 CBMA Weekend will be taking place due to the rising surge in the virus and the age demographic of many of our supporters.

Currently, we are still planning to do the nomination and voting process and to have some sort of either small scale event at OD Resort and/or a virtual event in November to present the awards.

We are not making a final decision at this time for the weekend but plan on making an announcement during the September Nomination Announcements on 94.9FM The Surf on Friday September 25th as to what type and kind of event we will have in November.

We are extending the Nomination window this year until July 31st for availability for a project to be nominated due to the virus. Ballots will be mailed and/or emailed around July 20th so you can have some time to get them filled out and back in by the August 14th Deadline.

****There have been some changes on this year’s ballots in the following categories,

1.) All projects must now be released “and charted” by the deadline. In prior years, the project was eligible if released “and played” by the deadline on at least 3 or more shows.

2.) FM & AM Radio DJ have been combined to Radio DJ of the Year. We will allow up to 7 Nominees in this one category. This change came about as of a result of the many networks doing shows on many different formats which made the category hard to define fairly.

3.) Rising Star has changed the Eligibility period from 3 years to 5 years due to the lack of new artist entering the industry.

We here at CBMA are keeping a close eye on the Covid-19 situation and hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon and we can all get back to the Live Carolina Beach & Shag Music we love so much!!

Please support your local businesses that are struggling to stay afloat and make sure that when the time comes to patronize those establishments that keep our music and dance alive.

Last year with the help and direction of Bo "The Web Guy" Gilbert, we found out it is possible to do the Nominations and Voting online which we might have to do 100% this year due to the Coronavirus and postal restrictions.

Community Mourns the loss of Hugh
Saturday, June 20 2020

The Beach Music community is mourning the loss of Hugh "Tuff" Blanton as it was shared by his band Cat5 that he passed away earlier this morning at his home. In their Facebook post the band continued: "Hugh was a staple in our industry having played for the Entertainers, Breeze Band, Spare Change, Unknown Hinson, The Embers, Jim Quick and The Cat5 Band. People will remember him more for his personality and being a great family man and good husband. That smile was always on display to help make the world a better place. Our Hearts and Prayers go out to his wife Tammy, Daughter Nicole and sons Derrick and Braden, and all the Blanton family during this most difficult time. Arrangements are still being made and will be announced once finalized. We are going to miss you Tuff. You were an inspiration to everyone you came in contact with and forever will be a Cat5 StormChaser.Much love to you our brother."

So many in our community have prayed for Tuff since it was announced in October and he certainly leaves a huge void in the Beach Music industry. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family as well as his close friends and band mates during this time. Once service information has been announced we'll be sure to include that information on our website.

Beach Music Event Reminder
Friday, June 19 2020

We do our best here at Flip Flop Live to keep our event calendar updated but of course like most bands, artists, DJs, shag clubs and venue calendars, the COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed the way we do things the past couple of months. We HIGHLY encourage you to check with the venue or entertainer listed on any event on our calendar to confirm it will still be held as scheduled. While we do list/create many of the events on our platforms, the majority are hosted by others are updated on their end and we have no control over the information listed.

At times it seems as though some areas on the East Coast are getting back to "normal" but plans are changing quickly and we try our best to keep things updated daily but it's not getting any easier. Should you need the address or phone number to the various venues we have those available on our Venue Page. If you're a venue owner and you're not listed here, please contact us today so that we can add your information for our visitors.

Stay safe, keep supporting Beach Music and we hope to see everyone soon!
