We were saddened to read the news from the East Coast Rhythm and Blues Band about their fellow member Mike Ezzell.

From East Coast Rhythm and Blues Band's Facebook Page:
Their post read: "As we celebrate the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, it is with a heavy heart that we have to send this message today. We have lost a great friend, talented musician and a band brother.Mike was not only a great musician, but a loving husband and father. We all are in total shock this morning, but knowing he is in the loving arms of Jesus and celebrating with Him on His birthday helps to bring comfort. Please keep Mike’s family and our band family in your prayers."

From Steve Owen's and Summertime's Facebook Page:
" The first Carolina Beach music band I was ever a part of was the HIGH ROLLER BAND .. and the first Sax player I ever shared the stage with was this man ... Mike Ezzell .. in the early hours of yesterday morning Mike went to be with the lord. He will be remembered not only for the great music he made but also his fun wit and laid back personality. Mike has played and filled in with many bands over the years including Mixed Emotion, Delta Riders, High Roller Band, Ricky Godfrey Band , Ginger Thompson Band , and most recently East Coast R &B band .. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Mike’s family and many friends during this difficult time. Rest Easy Mike !"

We've included Mike's obituary below which includes service information and a guest book if you'd like to sign. We send our condolences to the family and to the band. We'll be praying for all of you in the coming days and weeks ahead.

Community Mourns the loss of Jimmy Weaver
Sunday, October 11 2020

UPDATE: June 1, 2021
We came across a great tribute to Jimmy that we wanted to share with everyone. This was put together by former band members of Jimmy's with "Too Much Fun" in which he was a member for seven years. The video goes on to say: "He sure made us a better band. Jimmy was a fun guy to be around, a great musician and a very fine human being. We will all miss him. We put together a small memorial to him from his years with TMF. The song, "New Toy" was a Jimmy original, and on our first record."
View the video below:

ORIGINAL POST: October 11, 2020

We read the shocking news yesterday afternoon that we lost another Beach Music great, Mr. Jimmy Weaver from Steve Owens and Summertime. So much talent rolled up in one package, it was always great to watch him perform and he was a great friend to so many. According to his website, Jimmy was previously a member of; The Embers, The Main Event Band, The Castaways, Slowhand, Back N' Time and most recently, Steve Owens and Summertime along with the Jimmy Weaver Trio. He also recorded with many other artists and bands across a wide variety of genres.

We've included the original post from the band as well as several videos we've taken the past couple of years below along with his latest single, Runnin' Blue. At the bottom there's also an interview from Johnny's Jukebox on Riptide Radio that John Hall and Jimmy asked us to post for them. Our continued prayers are with Jimmy's family, his Steve Owens and Summertime brothers and all of his friends. He will certainly be missed by so many!

We are devastated, and heartbroken beyond words.... Please keep his wife Theresa and his family/friends in your prayers. Ron had just retired in July of this year and had recently recorded some new music he was so excited about. The SMOKIN HOT FAMILY will truly miss our RON ..he was just not our Sax player he was FAMILY ....WE LOVE YOU RON ..Fly Hi our sweet friend and brother"

Community Mourns the loss of Phil Laughlin
Sunday, October 04 2020

We'd like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Phil Laughlin and also to the Rick Strickland Band. In a post earlier this evening the band posted the following: " It is with great sadness to share that our long time friend, RSB guitarist and the best RSB Chaplin we've ever had, Phil Laughlin, passed away today at 3pm. But we rejoice knowing that right now he is with Jesus and is perfectly healed. Heaven has surely gained a true angel, and one heck of a guitar player. We will miss you terribly Phil. Please join us in lifting his wife Sherry and their family in your prayers today and in the coming days. Last week, Rick & I visited with Phil & Sherry, and I asked him what was his favorite performance he'd ever played. He said last year with us at the 2019 Cammys. This photo is from that performance."

We've included the band's original post below and to read the obituary and for service information please visit: Omega Funeral Service

Feature Attraction Adds a New Member
Sunday, September 20 2020

In a post earlier today the Feature Attraction Band announced on their Facebok page the addition of their newest member, James Snead on bass guitar. The post from their website states: "We'd like to officially welcome our newest member, Mr. James Snead from South Hill, Virginia on bass guitar. James started playing bass by ear at the age of eleven and even studied saxophone in school. Coming from a talented musical family, it comes natural to James and we're happy to have him join us.  If you're planning on coming to the (boat only) "Beach Music on Buggs" event on Saturday, September 26, 2020 in Clarksville, Virginia, that will be his debut performance as a member of FAB.Welcome James, we're looking forward to the good times to come!"

You'll remember on September 10, 2020 we also published an article announcing FAB's bassist, Doug Branch's resignation. Previous Article

News from the Band of Oz
Tuesday, September 15 2020

In a Facebook post earlier this evening David Hicks from the Band of Oz posted the following update concerning the upcoming shows;

"Many of our friends were expecting to see the Band of Oz this past weekend but those shows were cancelled. I need to let those people as well as the people that are counting on seeing us this coming weekend know what is going on with the band.. First of all I have cancelled the shows in Forest Va . Colonial Beach Va and The Farm Beach Show this weekend. Of course the The Farm will still go on with the show with a replacement for our band.

On this past Saturday morning at 11am I received a call from a band member to inform me that he was positive with the Corona Virus. I immediately contacted the agent for our Saturday night show and cancelled . I then contacted the people that we were to play for on Sunday afternoon and cancelled that as well. I knew that we couldnt take the band out in public . As the week has progressed the band member has gotten quite sick . As of yesterday morning I made the call to our clients for this weekend to inform them that we are all getting tested for the virus and that we will not be going back out until this is all cleared up.. I was not going to divulge the name of the band member but I think at this point it may be of some help to him and his wife for our friends and family to know so that you can pray for their recovery from this awful virus.. Chris Jennings and his wife have this virus..Leslie is doing quite well with it and I think that is due to the fact that she is 15 years younger than Chris. We are praying that no one else in the band gets sick from this virus as the days progress. I will try to let you all know about the results of the test that all band members and support crew are taking.. Please pray along with all of us that no one else in our band or crew gets sick and pray that this virus is defeated soon. Thank you all and we look forward to getting back out and performing soon."

Our prayers are with Chris and his wife as well as the rest of the members and crew with the band. Stay safe and we hope to see you soon. You will find David's original post below.

We love watching the younger generations carry on the tradition of Beach Music and of course that includes shaggin'. Beach Music on Buggs II
Saturday, August 29 2020

We had such a great response to the "Beach Music on Buggs" event earlier this month that we decided to do it again and make it even bigger and better. Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 26, 2020 from 3:00-6:00PM! Boaters are invited to gather at the point behind the Magnuson Hotel between the railroad trestle and the 58 Business bridge in Clarksville. DJ Andy Lucy be broadcasting on Flip Flop Live Radio but instead of prerecorded music we'll have two Southside, Virginia favorites performing LIVE on the banks of Buggs Island Lake.

Flip Flop Live along with Lake Life Live proudly present JB and the Get Down Browns along with the Feature Attraction Band.

There will be several ways to listen which include tuning your radio to: 88.1 FM, by downloading the Live365 app and searching "Flip Flop Live",  streaming on our website: www.FlipFlopLiveRadio.com and of course the bands will have their system setup on the banks of the lake. We'd like to thank David Varner of Lake Country Internet for providing the highspeed internet connection and also to the Magnuson Hotel on the Lake for providing power for this event. **Please note** The FM signal will only be available in the vicinity of the Magnuson hotel with our transmitter.

New Release from Chadwick Station
Saturday, August 22 2020

August 22, 2020

Have you heard the brand new single from Chadwick Station? A British band that relocated to Nashville and they describe their sound as: " Brit pop, R&B, rock, a little country." We were approached several weeks ago for our thoughts on the song and how we thought it would do in the Beach Music community. It certainly has a 70's flair to it and of course we love to hear any song with brass! For any Beach Music DJ, if you don't have a copy of the song let us know and we can get that to you. Recorded in Nashville and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London and we've already heard it on several stations/shows in North Carolina. The song is also available on Spotify and Apple Music.

In the press release on their website they talk about their new single, "Cryin' (Ain't Gonna Win Her Back). Pure retro R&B. Like The Sound of Philadelphia, or Stax out of Memphis back in the day. The folks in the Carolinas call it beach music. Contagious bass. Rhythmic drums. Dirty horns. Makes you want to dance. It's like you jumped in a hot tub time machine." You can hear the song during our live remote on Flip Flop Live Radio this afternoon (Saturday, August 22, 2020) from 4-7PM by streaming the show from our website or the Live365 app. You can also watch the music video below.

Happy National Radio Day
Thursday, August 20 2020

August 20, 2020

Happy National Radio Day from Flip Flop Live!
While it's not a nationally sanctioned holiday, we love to celebrate the invention of the radio on August 20th each year. What would the world be like without Radio? It brought us closer together as a nation including use in government operations, news and music distribution and many other uses that are widely used today. Celebrate radio each and every day because we certainly do!

Think about the careers that were made possible throughout the radio industry and what about the fame some achieved in the early days while families sat around listening to radio programs. Not only should we celebrate the radio itself but support your favorite DJ's, the stations and the sponsors who help keep these stations on the air. You can't have one without the other and these talented guys and gals keep the music playing twenty-four hours a day for our enjoyment. Certainly technology has advanced where we now have satellite and internet radio and while they may not transmit across the same airwaves, they still derive from the original radio and they have become part of our everyday lives.

Thank you to all of our DJ friends, station owners and sponsors! If you'd like to discover new shows, stations and DJ's be sure to check the radio schedule on our homepage and also our DJ and Radio listing pages and connect with new friends.

SOS Fall Migration Canceled
Monday, August 03 2020

The following information was shared on the Society of Stranders website. SOS logo property of the Society of Stranders

August 3, 2020

   Fellow Stranders,
It is with great disappointment the ACSC/SOS Board announces Fall Migration 2020 is officially cancelled. All reasoning and thought could not find a way to go forward with our SOS event. Each SOS member’s safety and health are first and foremost in making this decision.

On August 3rd the two SOS clubs, Fat Harold’s and Ducks, will re-open after being closed. The Governor’s new mandate states that these establishments (bars/restaurants) can only have 50% occupancy bases on fire marshals rating. No occupant standing or congregating in or at the bar area. Masks are required when entering the club / restaurant, must maintain safe distancing. Dancing is allowed but must wear mask and maintain social distancing. These are just a few of the restrictions that would be impossible to control at an SOS event.

Horry County is still a hot spot for the covid-19 virus. If SOS took place in September, there would be no way to control the crowd or the conditions around the events of Fall Migration. The decision made by the ACSC/SOS Board was based on your personal safety and health.
In appreciation of our SOS members, SOS will honor your 2020 SOS membership card through February 1, 2021. If you purchased a 2020 SOS membership earlier in the year, thank you. The SOS membership cards will be on sale through all the usual outlets.

Any questions can be answered by
any of the ACSC/SOS Board Members.

Community Mourns the loss of Gary Bass
Monday, July 20 2020

July 20, 2020

Saturday, July 18, 2020 we received the sad news of the passing of legendary DJ, Gary Bass. He will be missed by so many that he's touched through friendships as well as throughout his music career. Our prayers go out to his family during this time along with the Beach Music Community. For service information, to read his obituary and to send your condolences to the family, please use the link below!

N. Myrtle Beach and the Beach Music world will soon say goodbye to a landmark. "Judy’s House of Oldies of North Myrtle Beach opened in 1987, and was formerly known as the Beach Music Center, which opened in 1963 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina." They're family owned and they specialize in oldies, Carolina Beach Music along with rhythm and blues. Their website states: "Most of our demand is for shag dance music and west coast dancing, as well as east coast dance music."

As you will remember back in April of 2019 we lost Judy Collins,  founding member of the OD Shag Club and  co-owner of Judy's House of Oldies which was a big loss to the Beach Music community. We'll certainly miss our visits to the store during our trips to N. Myrtle Beach but we wish everyone all the best because this is truly the ending of an era. Below you will find the official Facebook post from owner Jeannie Elmore announcing the closure.

You can visit their website to purchase but we also recommend calling or visiting to inquire about availability. Store information can be found below.

 Covid-19 / The 2020 CBMA's
Wednesday, July 08 2020

July 8, 2020

In three emails shared earlier today, they've released information on Cammy weekend in November along with an extended nomination window due to COVID-19.  We have information from all of the messages below. **Please note** as of right now (Wednesday, July 8, 2020), Cammy weekend HAS NOT been canceled. They're not making the determination at this time but they do plan on announcing the plans during the nomination announcement show that will broadcast live on 94.9 FM The Surf on Friday, September 25, 2020. Stay tuned for more updates!  Also if you haven't joined the academy yet, you can visit this link for more information.

Covid-19 / The 2020 CBMA's

Due to the Covid19 pandemic, it does not look like the 2020 CBMA Weekend will be taking place due to the rising surge in the virus and the age demographic of many of our supporters.

Currently, we are still planning to do the nomination and voting process and to have some sort of either small scale event at OD Resort and/or a virtual event in November to present the awards.

We are not making a final decision at this time for the weekend but plan on making an announcement during the September Nomination Announcements on 94.9FM The Surf on Friday September 25th as to what type and kind of event we will have in November.

We are extending the Nomination window this year until July 31st for availability for a project to be nominated due to the virus. Ballots will be mailed and/or emailed around July 20th so you can have some time to get them filled out and back in by the August 14th Deadline.

****There have been some changes on this year’s ballots in the following categories,

1.) All projects must now be released “and charted” by the deadline. In prior years, the project was eligible if released “and played” by the deadline on at least 3 or more shows.

2.) FM & AM Radio DJ have been combined to Radio DJ of the Year. We will allow up to 7 Nominees in this one category. This change came about as of a result of the many networks doing shows on many different formats which made the category hard to define fairly.

3.) Rising Star has changed the Eligibility period from 3 years to 5 years due to the lack of new artist entering the industry.

We here at CBMA are keeping a close eye on the Covid-19 situation and hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon and we can all get back to the Live Carolina Beach & Shag Music we love so much!!

Please support your local businesses that are struggling to stay afloat and make sure that when the time comes to patronize those establishments that keep our music and dance alive.

Last year with the help and direction of Bo "The Web Guy" Gilbert, we found out it is possible to do the Nominations and Voting online which we might have to do 100% this year due to the Coronavirus and postal restrictions.

Community Mourns the loss of Hugh
Saturday, June 20 2020

The Beach Music community is mourning the loss of Hugh "Tuff" Blanton as it was shared by his band Cat5 that he passed away earlier this morning at his home. In their Facebook post the band continued: "Hugh was a staple in our industry having played for the Entertainers, Breeze Band, Spare Change, Unknown Hinson, The Embers, Jim Quick and The Cat5 Band. People will remember him more for his personality and being a great family man and good husband. That smile was always on display to help make the world a better place. Our Hearts and Prayers go out to his wife Tammy, Daughter Nicole and sons Derrick and Braden, and all the Blanton family during this most difficult time. Arrangements are still being made and will be announced once finalized. We are going to miss you Tuff. You were an inspiration to everyone you came in contact with and forever will be a Cat5 StormChaser.Much love to you our brother."

So many in our community have prayed for Tuff since it was announced in October and he certainly leaves a huge void in the Beach Music industry. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family as well as his close friends and band mates during this time. Once service information has been announced we'll be sure to include that information on our website.

Beach Music Event Reminder
Friday, June 19 2020

We do our best here at Flip Flop Live to keep our event calendar updated but of course like most bands, artists, DJs, shag clubs and venue calendars, the COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed the way we do things the past couple of months. We HIGHLY encourage you to check with the venue or entertainer listed on any event on our calendar to confirm it will still be held as scheduled. While we do list/create many of the events on our platforms, the majority are hosted by others are updated on their end and we have no control over the information listed.

At times it seems as though some areas on the East Coast are getting back to "normal" but plans are changing quickly and we try our best to keep things updated daily but it's not getting any easier. Should you need the address or phone number to the various venues we have those available on our Venue Page. If you're a venue owner and you're not listed here, please contact us today so that we can add your information for our visitors.

Stay safe, keep supporting Beach Music and we hope to see everyone soon!

Andy Swindell's departure from The Embers
Thursday, June 18 2020

Photo property of Andy Swindell

In a Facebook post earlier today, Thursday June 18, 2020, Andy Swindell announced his departure from The Embers featuring Craig Woolard. His post included: " With Covid 19, I am in a high risk group (I’m 67), and just recovered from pneumonia. The band has/had some actual live jobs, but I just don’t feel that it’s a good decision for me to play them. I wish Craig and the guys nothing but the best, and hope that they’re able to safely play a full calendar soon.My plans are to keep writing and recording as much as I am able. The creative process is what’s kept me involved and motivated my entire life, and I thank God that I have something so challenging to keep me sane and happy. It is my hope that you folks will continue to hang out with me on Facebook. And, hopefully, you will enjoy my future efforts. God bless us all!"

We wish Andy nothing but the best in his future endeavors and his talent and voice will certainly be missed on the stage and in the future recordings with The Embers. You can see Andy's original post below along with links to his social media pages and his website so that you're able to keep up with him.

SOS Fun Sunday/ Fun Monday Canceled
Tuesday, May 19 2020

It was just announced that the 2020 Fun Sunday and Fun Monday events have been canceled. The two dates originally scheduled this year were Sunday, September 20, 2020 and Monday, September 21, 2020 in N. Myrtle Beach. Due to issues beyond their control, they've announced the cancellation of the two day event and we've included that for you below!

The announcement reads as followed:

"It is with a heavy heart that we must write this note, as SOS Fun Sunday / Fun Monday has been cancelled for 2020. Due to projected revenue of our event being compromised due to Covid 19, a decision was made and agreed upon by the SOS Enhancement Committee in conjunction with SOS and the ACSC. Approximately 85% of our revenue comes from shag club raffle sales and since they are not currently allowed to hold meetings or socials and no time line as to when clubs will be able to meet, a decision had to be made, at this time. We are so sorry to have to cancel this great event but due to circumstances beyond our control, it is our only option. We appreciate all of your support in the last 20 plus years and are looking forward to 2021! - The SOS Enhancement Committee

Save Our Stages
Friday, May 15 2020

Thanks to Jim Quick for sharing the post below:

" The future of our music industry is in dire straits. I understand that there are a lot of serious issues at hand today. However, when this is all over we may have a crisis in the music world. Small music venues are the foundation of live performing artists. Without them there is no musical expression. From small clubs to amphitheaters, they complete the circle that is the relationship between the artist and the music lover. We as the writers, singers, and performers have been most creative during these insane and most unusual times. But, we need to be mindful of the dormant structures that we all call home for the healing with sounds of soul. Please go to saveourstages.com and write a letter to legislators asking them to save our independent music venues.

Society of Stranders Make Tough Call
SOS Spring Safari Canceled

The ACSC/SOS Board members made a tough decision to cancel SOS Spring Safari due to the coronavirus. Nobody likes to cancel or reschedule events and surely an event like SOS that impacts so many, it makes the decisions even harder. In their release it stated: “it is our responsibility for your safety and well-being, as we are an older group and it seems to affect our group the most. Your understanding of the situation will help us get through this.” They are talking about planning for an expanded Fall Migration in which we hope the Covid-19 situation will not be of any concern.

Online Shag Lessons
Sam and Lisa West

In an attempt to bring some normalcy to the shag community, Sam and Lisa West offered online shag lessons and we think that’s a great idea! After their first lesson the response was so positive they’ve decided to continue the classes on Sundays and Thursdays and includes; Music and Warm-up, Beginner Class, Music and Break followed by an Intermediate Class. They also started a “Virtual SOS” on YouTube for $75.00 for a single and $100.00 for a couple/household. Visit their website or Facebook page for details and you can find those links on our website news feed.

New Daily Radio Show Schedule
Tuesday, April 28 2020

We've been working on adding another feature to our platform and we thought this would be a great time to announce it with everyone being close to their radios and mobile devices in lieu of attending live events. What a great time to discover new stations, shows and DJ's. Just like we pulled all of the live events together into one calendar we wanted to do the same for the DJ's and radio stations who offer streaming in conjuction with their regular broadcasts. We want to help you reach new listeners so we're announcing the FFL Streaming Radio Schedule.

You will find it on our homepage and it will update throughout the day as shows cycle through and you can also view a full page version here. If your show isn't listed we invite you to submit your details to us and if you  need to make a correction to a listing you can also do that on the same form. We've compiled our current list from various station and show websites listed on our website. Is your favorite show or station not included? Let us know because we want everyone listed!

Thank you for your continued support for Flip Flop Live and the Beach Music Industry! We want our information to be correct and complete to make your experience on our platforms easy to navigate and reliable.

Your Flip Flop Live Team!

Carolina Beach Music HOF 2020
Tuesday, April 21 2020

**CBMA Logo is property of the Carolina Beach Music Academy**

We'll be streaming the show LIVE right here on Flip Flop Live!

This Friday, April 20, 2020, join DJ Mike Worley and Peter Carpenter as they announce the 2020 Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame Inductees LIVE on 94.9 The Surf. Tune in and be the first to hear! Also support your favorite bands, artists, DJ's, venues and the industry by joining the academy today! The biggest Beach Music party of the year is coming November 12th - 15th in N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina for the 26th Annual Carolina Beach Music Awards.

Friday you can listen to the broadcast live on the Surf's website and we'll also have it available for you here on our homepage.

View past inductees here

Important Reminder:
The entire industry has been hit hard recently and this year we ALL need to step up and help wherever we can.One of the easiest things that you can do is invite new friends to join the academy. If each one of us can at least get one new person to join, that would help give the industry a boost, not to mention we add even more music lovers to the family.

Here are a few other ways that you can help!

  • DJ's and Beach Radio
Tune in and call your favorite DJ's and stations and request your favorite songs. Most do it for the love of the music but operating a station and/or show can become costly and they rely on their sponsors to keep things going. The sponsors want listeners to hear their ads so the more we can increase their numbers the more it can help. Show them love on their social media pages and keep in touch as you can always find the greatest music on earth playing on one of the great stations available to us. If you haven't tried streaming shows outside of your normal listening area, try it on apps such as Tune-In, IHeartRadio and Live365. Several stations also have apps you can download specifically for their broadcast.

  • Bands and Artists
The many artists and bands will see a huge impact from the Covid-19 outbreak with attendance becoming limited in an attempt to control the spread. Shows have been canceled or postponed from Virginia to South Carolina and for many bands and artists this is their only source of income. Interact with the bands online to keep their social media pages active and let them know how much you appreciate what they do everyday. You can also purchase their music from outlets such as BuyBeachMusic, Judy's House of Oldies and other streaming sources such as iTunes, Amazon Music, GooglePlay and more. What a great time to go through your phones and upload some of the videos and photos and tag the bands and even invite your friends to like their page. They're just as eager as you to get back on the road and let's do what we can to help promote their brand and music.

  • Shag Clubs
Although we may not be able to come together and our way of life has come to a screeching hault, that doesn't mean we can't still enjoy sharing and fellowship online. Working on new moves at home? Share it online! Check out the many shag groups available online, meet new friends and invite others to join in the lifestyle. The world may stop but the music never does and anything we can do to promote it will keep things going during this difficult time while putting a smile on our faces.

  • The Industry
If you haven't renewed your membership for the Carolina Beach Music Academy, take the time now to download and print the forms and/or pay online. With everything being affected, we assume the United States Postal Service could also see a decrease in speed so it's best to get your CBMA forms in the mail today instead of waiting. Don't forget, you can also purchase your CBMA Award show tickets on the Alabama Theatre website. We know many wait until the last minute but we encourage you to secure your seats because after this hiatus, everyone will be ready for some fun in N. Myrtle Beach.

  • The Venues
Venue owners and management probably don't have a lot of time during their normal business hours to respond to emails and inquiries but now would be a good time to thank them for supporting live music, dance events and of course Beach Music. Maybe there's a band you'd like to see at their club that hasn't been included in their lineup. Why not let them know? The venues which also includes restaurants and bars will also be hit pretty hard with this along with their employees. If they're able to still offer curb-side and carry out, please support these local people who support the lifestyle we enjoy. Without the venues where will we go to continue the tradition?

BSR&B Launches a New LIVE Show
Monday, April 20 2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - 4/20/2020

Beach Shag Rhythm & Blues Radio is proud to announce the addition of a new weekly Carolina Beach Music show.  Beginning Monday April 27th, 2020, you can tune in on Monday nights from 8-10 to “Highway 17 with Ben Morris”. Ben will be LIVE and you find him on Facebook by searching for “Highway 17 with Ben Morris”.

We are excited about the launch of Ben’s show and look forward to having you listen and enjoy.  Please join all of us here at Beach Shag Rhythm & Blues Radio in welcoming Ben to the air! Below is a bio on Ben to help you get to know him a little better.

“I was 7 years old and growing up in East Tennessee when I acquired a couple of Jackie Wilson 45's.  I was taken in by the sounds off those old Brunswick labeled records, and I was hooked on the R&B music sounds.  As I grew into my teenage years, R&B/Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Country were staples in my music tastes. I was also learning to play violin and took some piano.  I remember my Mom singing to Far Away Places, Washed Ashore, and other songs that eventually woke me up to Beach Music. I even remember going to see The Platters and Gen. Johnson and The Chairmen Of The Board when I was a teenager in the late 1980's or early 1990's at a local summer festival.

As I went to University of Tennessee, there was a soul singer that always had a backing band that I got to see several times as a student during football season around campus, and I was hooked on Beach Music. That was Clifford Curry.  Other than saying hello, I never got to know him but loved his music. I ended up looking for more of the groups in the Beach Music genre in the 1990's and added to my collection. After college, I ended up living in Southeast Georgia as a young man and got to go hear The Embers, Swingin' Medallions, and Chairmen of The Board, live as they would play local events and engagements in the area at the time.  I was hooked again for life. I even attempted to find a young lady and try and shag with the basic steps.

I have continued to enjoy the music, old and new alike.  The music makes people feel good and makes you think of the sand, sun, and sea.  The old music sparks memories of yesteryear and the new groups make you smile as you see the traditions and sounds carried on to the new generations and incorporating new sounds.

That is my Beach Music story.  I love sharing and playing the music for my friends and family and look forward to you joining me on Highway 17.”

-Ben Morris

If you've ever been to the Virginia Beach oceanfront during the Beach Music events, Travis Thereault is certainly no stranger. Travis is a local celebrity in Virginia Beach and can be found hanging out with the bands and bringing them on stage throughout the Summer.  When local Fire Captain Bill Roestenberg heard Travis' new bike was stolen he "jumped into action". You can watch the story below from WTKR. We also included a few more stories of Travis that were previously featured on the station.

News Bulletin from SOS
Saturday, March 21 2020

Fellow Stranders and Friends,

Just wanted to give you all an update about ACSC/SOS Functions. Currently as many of you know many restaurants and bars, etc. at N. Myrtle Beach are closed because of the Covid-19 pandemic. I know that some of you were planning on still going to the beach during the 10 days of SOS even though it still remains cancelled, however there is so much uncertainty about the virus and the longevity of it, that no one knows for sure how long this will go on. You may want to re-consider your travel plans, condo rentals, hotel rentals, etc.

The Board is currently working on plans for Fall Migration, with DETAILS to follow as they are known. We have been in contact with the City of N. Myrtle Beach about POSSIBLY having the parade at Fall Migration. Nothing has been confirmed at this time, but as Ron said “we are keeping our fingers crossed” and hoping for the best. Ron has been working tirelessly for SOS, with the city, all our club partners, and all of our supporters.
We will keep you posted as things develop and hoping things start to turn around for all of us.
It remains important right now that we all remain safe and abide by the rules of the CDC concerning this pandemic. We remain confident that we will get past this and we can return to the lifestyle that we all love and live our life for.

Respectfully,

Ron Whisenant, SOS President (803-371-4731)

Ronnie Gregory, SOS Board Chair (336-213-7053)

Robin Morley, ACSC Chairman (828-443-5995)

Covid-19 & Beach Music
Tuesday, March 17 2020

March 17, 2020

The Beach Music Community has been heavily affected by the Covid-19 outbreak in the recent weeks and from the looks of things this will be the norm for quite some time. The industry has seen events both postponed and canceled and this will have an impact on everyone from the venues, DJ's, bands, shag clubs, venues, charity organizations and events. This is our time to shine as a community and we can still enjoy everything about Beach Music and support those who keep the industry alive.

  • DJ's and Beach Radio
Tune in and call your favorite DJ's and stations and request your favorite songs. Most do it for the love of the music but operating a station and/or show can become costly and they rely on their sponsors to keep things going.

If they're able to still offer curb-side and carryout, please support these local people who support the lifestyle we enjoy. Without the venues where will we go to continue the tradition?

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the entire country and we hope that each of you and your families will remain safe. There's no other community like ours and this is the time we need to come together, support one another until this storm has passed.

CDC Recommendation on Large Gatherings
Sunday, March 15 2020

March 15, 2020

The CDC updated their recommendation for large gatherings earlier this evening. See the information below that was found on their website.

Guidance as of 3/15/2020
Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of COVID-19 in the United States via travelers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities. Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings, and other types of assemblies. These events can be planned not only by organizations and communities but also by individuals.

Therefore, CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.

Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populationshand hygiene, and social distancing.  When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual.

This recommendation does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses. This recommendation is made in an attempt to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow the spread of infection in communities already affected by the virus.  This recommendation is not intended to supersede the advice of local public health officials.

News from the SOS Officers
Sunday, March 08 2020

March 7, 2020

Fellow Stranders, SOS Spring Safari will be soon upon us and we know that you are all looking forward to coming down to the beach. The SOS Board has been monitoring the current situation with the coronavirus (covid-19) and it is our responsibility to keep you informed on our current situation and ask your help to avoid as much of a risk as we can. There have been a few cases reported in some states but at this point no real threats have been reported. In accordance with the recommendations set forth by the CDC, we implore you to honor and help by doing some of the following things:

  • Cover a cough or sneeze with a tissue or sneeze into your elbow
  • Try not to touch your face
  • Wash your hands frequently with hot water and soap for 20 seconds
  • Use hand sanitizer as much as possible
  • SOS will be providing the clubs and the SOS Company Store with hand sanitizer at all entrances

Please no handshakes or hugging and kissing, instead do an elbow bump We are an older group and this virus seems to be affecting us the most. We are asking that if you are sick or have cold symptoms to stay home or in your condo and do not come out around everyone else. Hopefully, things will get better but we have to be responsible and we are asking you for your help. We will keep you advised of as much information as we can as we get closer to SOS. Your safety is our main concern.

If you have any questions, please call.

Ronnie Gregory, SOS Board Chair (336-213-7053)

NEW RELEASE- Too Much Sylvia AND Blackwater
Thursday, March 05 2020

March 5, 2020

Official Release from Green Dot Records

Picture this: four guys from two of our Carolina Beach Music Bands meet at a K&W Cafeteria in
Burlington, North Carolina. The purpose of this lunch, which last 2.5 hours, was to discuss some
of the “business arrangements” for their December 2020 Cruise together out of Miami.
Now, guess what specific subject do these guys wind up talking about? Yep, MUSIC!
After an hour or so, they toss around this idea: “How cool would it be to record a song,
TOGETHER?”

Three weeks later, The Blackwater Band and Too Much Sylvia would like to introduce you to
their studio collaboration of, “THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN!”

We see many singers record songs with other singers and bands. But, this is TWO BANDS
actually recording one song together and featuring TEN different lead vocalists. This unique
arrangement combines elements from two totally different songs of the same name, by bands
known as The Bus Boys & Thin Lizzy.

Blackwater and Too Much Sylvia are working on playing a few shows together this year and
giving everyone a preview of their “Blackwater on Bluewater Cruise”.

Expect a forthcoming compilation CD, including “THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN” and other
new music from Carolina artists very soon!

“It’s all about the MUSIC!

We Celebrate One Year!
Tuesday, February 04 2020

February 4, 2020

It was one year ago today that Flip Flop Live was officially launched! We never expected to have the success we've been so fortunate to achieve, especially within our first year. Two guys who love Beach Music with one simple idea that has proven to help so many and to fill a void while bridging all aspects of the the lifestyle we cherish. Our initial thought and goal was to simply be your one stop destination for everything Beach Music and that still remains true today but we're expanding on opportunities to reach an even larger base with upcoming plans we have in currently in place.

We've met so many great people while attending various events and so many who approach us and thank us for our work. It's a great feeling knowing that we've helped others who struggled to find the same information we were seeking that prompted us to take the plunge with our idea. No it's no rocket science but we attempt to present everything on a clean, easy to navigate platform allowing you to quickly find the information you're looking for along with quality content and accurate information.

We work daily to find information we feel is important to our visitors along with updating our website with submissions from various sources across three states and we welcome any new submissions. Our industry is alive and well and with support of everyone, we can all make an impact. Help us to continue to build Flip Flop Live around "The Community" by visiting, sharing, submitting information during our quest to make sure we're your one stop destination for "Everything Beach Music. Thank you for all of your support and we do have big things planned and currently in the works and we look forward to releasing this information to you.

Janaury 24, 2020

The Beach Music industry has taken another hit with the loss of Jim Bowers. Posts on social media began circulating about the loss of Jim and the love from so many friends is clear to see how much he was loved. An event has been planned in his honor and was shared in a post by Sharon Fuquay Fries that reads; "A “Big Party” will be held on Monday, February 3, 2020 at 1 pm Summerville Country Club, 400 Country Club Blvd, Summerville, SC 29483. Come as you are (flip flops, hats, and Gamecock wear are welcome😘)and enjoy music, food, fun, family, and friends. We expect a lot of memories, and storytelling, AND I’m willing to bet there will be dancing! Hope to see you there, and THANK YOU all, for the tremendous outpouring of support for his family❤️"

Once an obituary has been posted we will share that information with you here. You can read many of the posts below from his friends on Facebook by visiting his page. Our prayers to his family and friends and the Beach Music community.

BAND / ARTIST NEWS

HIP POCKET
Dustin York

In a Facebook post on December 10, 2019, Dustin York announced he would be leaving Hip Pocket and the prior weekend show was his last appearance with the band. He went on to thank the band members and fans and said “I’m sad to see it end, I’m also excited to see what the future holds”. We’d like to wish Dustin all of the best in his future endeavors. We had the opportunity to see the band perform during the 2019 CBMA weekend and they put on a great show.

The Embers featuring Craig Woolard
Christmas Show at the Roanoke Rapids Theatre

Is there a city the Embers’ Christmas show didn’t see in 2019? On December 12, 2019 we were able to catch the show in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. We must say, the star of the 2019 Christmas show had to be Julio Eubanks with his rendition of Feliz Navidad as seen in Bob Blair’s video posted on December 17, 2019. If you missed your opportunity to see it live, you missed out on a great show!

BAND OF OZ
Aubrey’s Christmas Bash

On December 20, 2019 we attended Aubrey’s Christmas Bash at the Old Towne Civic Center in Petersburg, Virginia. Photos and videos from this event will be posted shortly on our website. As to be expected, they put on a fantastic show in BOZ fashion. With the addition of Chris and Dustin they’ve really added another dimension to an already stellar lineup of musicians and performers. It was great talking to the guys and we appreciate the positive comments regarding Flip Flop Live and you can look for more giveaways coming soon from KHP Music and Flip Flop Live.

STEVE OWENS AND SUMMERTIME
We were invited to attend a private event with Steve Owens and Summertime in Lawrenceville, Virginia on December 21, 2019. The band didn’t disappoint as they kept the dance floor full all evening and our very Andy Lucy had the chance to show off his drumming skills on “Mustang Sally”. Videos from the event have been posted on our website. Steve and the guys performed their newest single, You can’t fall up (You Just Fall Down) that’s included on the Party for a Lifetime CD. If you haven’t heard their version of this song, call your favorite DJ and request it. We had the chance to enjoy dinner with the band thanks to the generous hosts, Daven and Lynn Lucy of Virginia Pallets and Wood, LLC. Thank you for inviting Flip Flop Live to take part of this event.

AMMON’S ALLSTARS PERFORM
On Sunday, December 29, 2019 we travelled to “The Banque” in Norfolk, Virginia where Ammon’s Allstars performed for an early New Year’s Eve event at the club. If you’re ever In the area we highly recommend you visit this venue. It has a large dance floor, three bars, delicious food and the staff is very attentive. The band performed a wide variety of Beach, Motown and of course the Rhondel’s hits. Bassist for the group is Don Quisenberry who was inducted into the CBMA Hall of Fame during the 2019 awards weekend in N. Myrtle Beach and playing in Ammon’s place was Wilton “The Animal” Ferguson who is the current drummer for the Feature Attraction Band (FAB). They put on a great show and it featured five horns, a video compilation can be found on the video page of our website.

CAT5
Hugh “Tuff” Blanton Update

On December 30, 2019, Billy Darr (current performing bassist) provided an update on Tuff. Billy said “he looks great and is doing well”.  He also said that Tuff will be back with the band soon. If you’d like to see the photo and post by Billy, it can be found on our website along with the link to make a donation to help offset medical expenses.

Happy National Disc Jockey Day!
Monday, January 20 2020

January 20, 2020

It's time to celebrate the ones we allow in our homes daily, during our travels and those who support the industry we love. Beach Music is comprised of a diverse group of DJs that keep our favorite songs alive and for that we say thank you. They bring us the hottest new tracks while at the same time bringing back old memories with the classic music we cherish. Share and give your favorite DJs a shoutout today on their social media pages or give them a call on-air and thank them for everything they do. Without the DJs and stations many artists and/or bands wouldn't be able to do what they love every single day and they're an extremely important part of every genre of music, however none can compare to the ones we have in Beach Music. Love to all of our DJ friends and thank you from Flip Flop Live!

Information from National Day Calendar

Each year National Disc Jockey Day recognizes the DJs playing the music and spinning the records. The observance takes place annually on January 20th.

A disc jockey, or DJ for short, is a person who plays recorded music either on the radio or at a club or event.

The first disc jockey was an experiment on the airwaves. In 1909, sixteen-year-old Ray Newby was a student under the supervision of Charles “Doc” Herrold at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. He played the first records over the airwaves before the word disc jockey even existed.

What started as an experiment from the Garden City Bank Building where the college was located in San Fernando, California, was soon being replicated by radio broadcasters across the country. Initially, Newby primarily broadcast his news, music, and entertainment live.

It wasn’t until 25 years later that radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term disc jockey.

Today, contemporary DJs play music from vinyl to digital. Regardless of the medium they use, the term disc jockey still applies.

Hip-hop DJs became popular in the late 70s and 80s using multiple turntables and using the turntables themselves as an instrument to alter the music. Mobile DJs often act as the master of ceremonies at events or parties directing the evening’s activities.

Lester “Paul” Craver, 71, died January 14, 2020 at MUSC, Charleston, SC.

Born on August 30, 1948 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of Lester Paul and Ruby L. Brandon Craver, Sr.

The music bug bit Paul Craver at an early age. The Ripete Records recording artist and Greensboro, NC, native entered high school - trumpet in tow - and quickly joined the school band. After graduation, he took his place in the United States Navy as a Signalman and served in Vietnam.

In 1972, he joined a group called Medium Cool and from his very first gig with the group, no one could keep him away from the microphone. He knew from that point that he had found his calling. After reconstructing the O’Kaysions, now known as the Fabulous Kays, Paul moved to Columbia, SC, in 1981, where he teamed up with Willis Blume to form Shagtime, a band that produced "Mr. Beach." Paul sang lead vocals on the project, and the single became a defining milestone in his career. Paul was a part of several bands over the years, but in 1993, the Men of Distinction band was formed. He sang lead vocals for them and they earned four Carolina Beach Music Awards. Paul has a history of his own in terms of the CBMA with a string of nominations and a good number of wins. He was a 2002 inductee into the Beach Music Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received Smoothie of the Year for "Emperor of My Baby's Heart," released on KHP Music's Keep On Shaggin compilation. In March 2008, Paul retired from the Men of Distinction and devoted more time to his solo career and deejay opportunities. In 2016, he was inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame. Since then, he has had many incredible opportunities to share his musical love and talent with others. In 2011, he was invited to sing in Belgium and was loved by all the people. During a University of South Carolina home game, he performed to the many fans in attendance.

He was the owner/operator of Craver Tile Co. and many will remember the hilarious radio commercials he and Gail made. He loved this country and the veterans that have helped keep us free. He had a great affinity for golf and his golf buddies. He was always on the go, but found the time to spend with Gail and his family. They were the most important to him.

Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Gail Angel Craver; sons Tripp Craver (Jenny), John Stephenson (Amber); daughters, Dotte Watts and Angela Stephenson; and nine grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Chris Craver, and brothers Bobby and Frank.

A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veterans’ Welcome Home & Resource Center, 421 State Hwy 57 South, Little River, SC 29566.

Dotte Watts posted information on her dad Paul Craver and step-mom Gail. Paul is a longtime Beach Music industry veteran DJ and singer. If you're able to help out momentarily please click here.

Dotte's post:
As most of you know, back in August my Daddy went for a regular routine checkup at the VA and they did an X-ray on his chest and found 2 aneurysms in his heart. The next day he went to Duke university in NC and had open heart Surgery as well as a double bypass. He ended up staying in the hospital for almost one month and since then he has been going downhill. One of the bypasses failed. Now he is battling low oxygen and blood pressure as well as fluid continuously building up. My step mom Gail has been by his side 24/7 taking care of him. He has been in and out of hospitals at least 10 times since. This past Saturday night he was rushed to McLeod Hospital in North Myrtle Beach and then Sunday was rushed to MUSC. He is still in ICU at MUSC and Charleston is over two hours away from their hometown of Little River, SC, so I’m trying to raise some money to help my Stepmom with food and lodging expenses as she is having to stay in a hotel close by every night. Even if you can’t help financially, can you please pray for them? The Bible says where two or more are gathered, there I will be! Thank you for all of your prayers. They mean so much through this difficult time and I know that if my Daddy could say thank you he would!!!
