UPDATE: June 1, 2021 We read the shocking news yesterday afternoon that we lost another Beach Music great, Mr. Jimmy Weaver from Steve Owens and Summertime. He also recorded with many other artists and bands across a wide variety of genres. We've included the original post from the band as well as several videos we've taken the past couple of years below along with his latest single, Runnin' Blue. At the bottom there's also an interview from Johnny's Jukebox on Riptide Radio that John Hall and Jimmy asked us to post for them. Our continued prayers are with Jimmy's family, his Steve Owens and Summertime brothers and all of his friends. He will certainly be missed by so many!

In a Facebook post earlier this evening David Hicks from the Band of Oz posted the following update concerning the upcoming shows; "Many of our friends were expecting to see the Band of Oz this past weekend but those shows were cancelled. I need to let those people as well as the people that are counting on seeing us this coming weekend know what is going on with the band.. First of all I have cancelled the shows in Forest Va . Colonial Beach Va and The Farm Beach Show this weekend. Of course the The Farm will still go on with the show with a replacement for our band. On this past Saturday morning at 11am I received a call from a band member to inform me that he was positive with the Corona Virus. I immediately contacted the agent for our Saturday night show and cancelled . I then contacted the people that we were to play for on Sunday afternoon and cancelled that as well. I knew that we couldnt take the band out in public . As the week has progressed the band member has gotten quite sick . As of yesterday morning I made the call to our clients for this weekend to inform them that we are all getting tested for the virus and that we will not be going back out until this is all cleared up.. I was not going to divulge the name of the band member but I think at this point it may be of some help to him and his wife for our friends and family to know so that you can pray for their recovery from this awful virus.. Chris Jennings and his wife have this virus..Leslie is doing quite well with it and I think that is due to the fact that she is 15 years younger than Chris. We are praying that no one else in the band gets sick from this virus as the days progress. I will try to let you all know about the results of the test that all band members and support crew are taking.. Please pray along with all of us that no one else in our band or crew gets sick and pray that this virus is defeated soon. Thank you all and we look forward to getting back out and performing soon."
Our prayers are with Chris and his wife as well as the rest of the members and crew with the band. Stay safe and we hope to see you soon. You will find David's original post below.

August 22, 2020 Have you heard the brand new single from Chadwick Station? A British band that relocated to Nashville and they describe their sound as: " Brit pop, R&B, rock, a little country." We were approached several weeks ago for our thoughts on the song and how we thought it would do in the Beach Music community. It certainly has a 70's flair to it and of course we love to hear any song with brass! For any Beach Music DJ, if you don't have a copy of the song let us know and we can get that to you. Recorded in Nashville and mastered at Abbey Road Studios in London and we've already heard it on several stations/shows in North Carolina. The song is also available on Spotify and Apple Music. In the press release on their website they talk about their new single, "Cryin' (Ain't Gonna Win Her Back). Pure retro R&B. Like The Sound of Philadelphia, or Stax out of Memphis back in the day. The folks in the Carolinas call it beach music. Contagious bass. Rhythmic drums. Dirty horns. Makes you want to dance. It's like you jumped in a hot tub time machine." You can hear the song during our live remote on Flip Flop Live Radio this afternoon (Saturday, August 22, 2020) from 4-7PM by streaming the show from our website or the Live365 app. You can also watch the music video below.

August 20, 2020 Happy National Radio Day from Flip Flop Live! Think about the careers that were made possible throughout the radio industry and what about the fame some achieved in the early days while families sat around listening to radio programs. Not only should we celebrate the radio itself but support your favorite DJ's, the stations and the sponsors who help keep these stations on the air. You can't have one without the other and these talented guys and gals keep the music playing twenty-four hours a day for our enjoyment. Certainly technology has advanced where we now have satellite and internet radio and while they may not transmit across the same airwaves, they still derive from the original radio and they have become part of our everyday lives. Thank you to all of our DJ friends, station owners and sponsors! If you'd like to discover new shows, stations and DJ's be sure to check the radio schedule on our homepage and also our DJ and Radio listing pages and connect with new friends. He will be missed by so many that he's touched through friendships as well as throughout his music career. It wasn't often the we'd visit Fat Harold's and not see him in one of the DJ booths or somewhere in the building. Full of life and a lot of fun we'll certainly miss the great conversations with Gary. Our prayers go out to his family during this time along with the Beach Music Community. July 8, 2020 In three emails shared earlier today, they've released information on Cammy weekend in November along with an extended nomination window due to COVID-19. We have information from all of the messages below. **Please note** as of right now (Wednesday, July 8, 2020), Cammy weekend HAS NOT been canceled. They're not making the determination at this time but they do plan on announcing the plans during the nomination announcement show that will broadcast live on 94.9 FM The Surf on Friday, September 25, 2020. Stay tuned for more updates! Also if you haven't joined the academy yet, you can visit this link for more information.
Due to the Covid19 pandemic, it does not look like the 2020 CBMA Weekend will be taking place due to the rising surge in the virus and the age demographic of many of our supporters. Currently, we are still planning to do the nomination and voting process and to have some sort of either small scale event at OD Resort and/or a virtual event in November to present the awards. We are not making a final decision at this time for the weekend but plan on making an announcement during the September Nomination Announcements on 94.9FM The Surf on Friday September 25th as to what type and kind of event we will have in November. We are extending the Nomination window this year until July 31st for availability for a project to be nominated due to the virus. Ballots will be mailed and/or emailed around July 20th so you can have some time to get them filled out and back in by the August 14th Deadline. ****There have been some changes on this year’s ballots in the following categories, 1.) All projects must now be released “and charted” by the deadline. In prior years, the project was eligible if released “and played” by the deadline on at least 3 or more shows. 2.) FM & AM Radio DJ have been combined to Radio DJ of the Year. We will allow up to 7 Nominees in this one category. This change came about as of a result of the many networks doing shows on many different formats which made the category hard to define fairly. 3.) Rising Star has changed the Eligibility period from 3 years to 5 years due to the lack of new artist entering the industry. We here at CBMA are keeping a close eye on the Covid-19 situation and hope and pray that this pandemic will end soon and we can all get back to the Live Carolina Beach & Shag Music we love so much!! Please support your local businesses that are struggling to stay afloat and make sure that when the time comes to patronize those establishments that keep our music and dance alive. Last year with the help and direction of Bo "The Web Guy" Gilbert, we found out it is possible to do the Nominations and Voting online which we might have to do 100% this year due to the Coronavirus and postal restrictions.

The Beach Music community is mourning the loss of Hugh "Tuff" Blanton as it was shared by his band Cat5 that he passed away earlier this morning at his home. In their Facebook post the band continued: "Hugh was a staple in our industry having played for the Entertainers, Breeze Band, Spare Change, Unknown Hinson, The Embers, Jim Quick and The Cat5 Band. People will remember him more for his personality and being a great family man and good husband. That smile was always on display to help make the world a better place. Our Hearts and Prayers go out to his wife Tammy, Daughter Nicole and sons Derrick and Braden, and all the Blanton family during this most difficult time. Arrangements are still being made and will be announced once finalized. We are going to miss you Tuff. You were an inspiration to everyone you came in contact with and forever will be a Cat5 StormChaser.Much love to you our brother." So many in our community have prayed for Tuff since it was announced in October and he certainly leaves a huge void in the Beach Music industry. Our sincere thoughts and prayers go out to his family as well as his close friends and band mates during this time. Once service information has been announced we'll be sure to include that information on our website. Friday, June 19 2020
We do our best here at Flip Flop Live to keep our event calendar updated but of course like most bands, artists, DJs, shag clubs and venue calendars, the COVID-19 pandemic has completely changed the way we do things the past couple of months. We HIGHLY encourage you to check with the venue or entertainer listed on any event on our calendar to confirm it will still be held as scheduled. While we do list/create many of the events on our platforms, the majority are hosted by others are updated on their end and we have no control over the information listed. At times it seems as though some areas on the East Coast are getting back to "normal" but plans are changing quickly and we try our best to keep things updated daily but it's not getting any easier. Should you need the address or phone number to the various venues we have those available on our Venue Page. If you're a venue owner and you're not listed here, please contact us today so that we can add your information for our visitors. Stay safe, keep supporting Beach Music and we hope to see everyone soon! Thursday, June 18 2020
Photo property of Andy Swindell In a Facebook post earlier today, Thursday June 18, 2020, Andy Swindell announced his departure from The Embers featuring Craig Woolard. His post included: " With Covid 19, I am in a high risk group (I’m 67), and just recovered from pneumonia. The band has/had some actual live jobs, but I just don’t feel that it’s a good decision for me to play them. I wish Craig and the guys nothing but the best, and hope that they’re able to safely play a full calendar soon.My plans are to keep writing and recording as much as I am able. The creative process is what’s kept me involved and motivated my entire life, and I thank God that I have something so challenging to keep me sane and happy. It is my hope that you folks will continue to hang out with me on Facebook. And, hopefully, you will enjoy my future efforts. God bless us all!" We wish Andy nothing but the best in his future endeavors and his talent and voice will certainly be missed on the stage and in the future recordings with The Embers. You can see Andy's original post below along with links to his social media pages and his website so that you're able to keep up with him.

It was just announced that the 2020 Fun Sunday and Fun Monday events have been canceled. The two dates originally scheduled this year were Sunday, September 20, 2020 and Monday, September 21, 2020 in N. Myrtle Beach. Due to issues beyond their control, they've announced the cancellation of the two day event and we've included that for you below!
"It is with a heavy heart that we must write this note, as SOS Fun Sunday / Fun Monday has been cancelled for 2020. Due to projected revenue of our event being compromised due to Covid 19, a decision was made and agreed upon by the SOS Enhancement Committee in conjunction with SOS and the ACSC. Approximately 85% of our revenue comes from shag club raffle sales and since they are not currently allowed to hold meetings or socials and no time line as to when clubs will be able to meet, a decision had to be made, at this time. We are so sorry to have to cancel this great event but due to circumstances beyond our control, it is our only option. We appreciate all of your support in the last 20 plus years and are looking forward to 2021! - The SOS Enhancement Committee

Thanks to Jim Quick for sharing the post below: " The future of our music industry is in dire straits. I understand that there are a lot of serious issues at hand today. However, when this is all over we may have a crisis in the music world. Small music venues are the foundation of live performing artists. Without them there is no musical expression. From small clubs to amphitheaters, they complete the circle that is the relationship between the artist and the music lover. We as the writers, singers, and performers have been most creative during these insane and most unusual times. But, we need to be mindful of the dormant structures that we all call home for the healing with sounds of soul. Please go to saveourstages.com and write a letter to legislators asking them to save our independent music venues.

“I was 7 years old and growing up in East Tennessee when I acquired a couple of Jackie Wilson 45's. I was taken in by the sounds off those old Brunswick labeled records, and I was hooked on the R&B music sounds. As I grew into my teenage years, R&B/Soul, Rock, Blues, Jazz, and Country were staples in my music tastes. I was also learning to play violin and took some piano. I remember my Mom singing to Far Away Places, Washed Ashore, and other songs that eventually woke me up to Beach Music. I even remember going to see The Platters and Gen. Johnson and The Chairmen Of The Board when I was a teenager in the late 1980's or early 1990's at a local summer festival. As I went to University of Tennessee, there was a soul singer that always had a backing band that I got to see several times as a student during football season around campus, and I was hooked on Beach Music. That was Clifford Curry. Other than saying hello, I never got to know him but loved his music. I ended up looking for more of the groups in the Beach Music genre in the 1990's and added to my collection. After college, I ended up living in Southeast Georgia as a young man and got to go hear The Embers, Swingin' Medallions, and Chairmen of The Board, live as they would play local events and engagements in the area at the time. I was hooked again for life. I even attempted to find a young lady and try and shag with the basic steps. I have continued to enjoy the music, old and new alike. The music makes people feel good and makes you think of the sand, sun, and sea. The old music sparks memories of yesteryear and the new groups make you smile as you see the traditions and sounds carried on to the new generations and incorporating new sounds. That is my Beach Music story. I love sharing and playing the music for my friends and family and look forward to you joining me on Highway 17.”

The Swingin' Medallions announced a brand new website during a Facebook live video earlier today along with some updates on their shows that have been rescheduled. We've included the video for you below:

If you've ever been to the Virginia Beach oceanfront during the Beach Music events, Travis Thereault is certainly no stranger. Travis is a local celebrity in Virginia Beach and can be found hanging out with the bands and bringing them on stage throughout the Summer. When local Fire Captain Bill Roestenberg heard Travis' new bike was stolen he "jumped into action". You can watch the story below from WTKR. We also included a few more stories of Travis that were previously featured on the station. Saturday, March 28 2020

March 17, 2020 The Beach Music Community has been heavily affected by the Covid-19 outbreak in the recent weeks and from the looks of things this will be the norm for quite some time. The industry has seen events both postponed and canceled and this will have an impact on everyone from the venues, DJ's, bands, shag clubs, venues, charity organizations and events. This is our time to shine as a community and we can still enjoy everything about Beach Music and support those who keep the industry alive.

March 15, 2020 The CDC updated their recommendation for large gatherings earlier this evening. See the information below that was found on their website.
Therefore, CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next 8 weeks, organizers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States. Events of any size should only be continued if they can be carried out with adherence to guidelines for protecting vulnerable populations, hand hygiene, and social distancing. When feasible, organizers could modify events to be virtual. This recommendation does not apply to the day to day operation of organizations such as schools, institutes of higher learning, or businesses. This recommendation is made in an attempt to reduce introduction of the virus into new communities and to slow the spread of infection in communities already affected by the virus. This recommendation is not intended to supersede the advice of local public health officials. Saturday, March 14 2020

We work daily to find information we feel is important to our visitors along with updating our website with submissions from various sources across three states and we welcome any new submissions. Information from National Day Calendar Each year National Disc Jockey Day recognizes the DJs playing the music and spinning the records. The observance takes place annually on January 20th. A disc jockey, or DJ for short, is a person who plays recorded music either on the radio or at a club or event. The first disc jockey was an experiment on the airwaves. In 1909, sixteen-year-old Ray Newby was a student under the supervision of Charles “Doc” Herrold at Herrold College of Engineering and Wireless. He played the first records over the airwaves before the word disc jockey even existed. What started as an experiment from the Garden City Bank Building where the college was located in San Fernando, California, was soon being replicated by radio broadcasters across the country. Initially, Newby primarily broadcast his news, music, and entertainment live. It wasn’t until 25 years later that radio commentator Walter Winchell coined the term disc jockey. Today, contemporary DJs play music from vinyl to digital. Regardless of the medium they use, the term disc jockey still applies. Hip-hop DJs became popular in the late 70s and 80s using multiple turntables and using the turntables themselves as an instrument to alter the music. Mobile DJs often act as the master of ceremonies at events or parties directing the evening’s activities. Saturday, January 18 2020
January 18, 2020 from Lee Funeral Home Lester “Paul” Craver, 71, died January 14, 2020 at MUSC, Charleston, SC. Born on August 30, 1948 in Greensboro, NC, he was the son of Lester Paul and Ruby L. Brandon Craver, Sr. The music bug bit Paul Craver at an early age. The Ripete Records recording artist and Greensboro, NC, native entered high school - trumpet in tow - and quickly joined the school band. After graduation, he took his place in the United States Navy as a Signalman and served in Vietnam. In 1972, he joined a group called Medium Cool and from his very first gig with the group, no one could keep him away from the microphone. He knew from that point that he had found his calling. After reconstructing the O’Kaysions, now known as the Fabulous Kays, Paul moved to Columbia, SC, in 1981, where he teamed up with Willis Blume to form Shagtime, a band that produced "Mr. Beach." Paul sang lead vocals on the project, and the single became a defining milestone in his career. Paul was a part of several bands over the years, but in 1993, the Men of Distinction band was formed. He sang lead vocals for them and they earned four Carolina Beach Music Awards. Paul has a history of his own in terms of the CBMA with a string of nominations and a good number of wins. He was a 2002 inductee into the Beach Music Hall of Fame. In 2007, he received Smoothie of the Year for "Emperor of My Baby's Heart," released on KHP Music's Keep On Shaggin compilation. In March 2008, Paul retired from the Men of Distinction and devoted more time to his solo career and deejay opportunities. In 2016, he was inducted into the DJ Hall of Fame. Since then, he has had many incredible opportunities to share his musical love and talent with others. In 2011, he was invited to sing in Belgium and was loved by all the people. During a University of South Carolina home game, he performed to the many fans in attendance. He was the owner/operator of Craver Tile Co. and many will remember the hilarious radio commercials he and Gail made. He loved this country and the veterans that have helped keep us free. He had a great affinity for golf and his golf buddies. He was always on the go, but found the time to spend with Gail and his family. They were the most important to him. Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Gail Angel Craver; sons Tripp Craver (Jenny), John Stephenson (Amber); daughters, Dotte Watts and Angela Stephenson; and nine grandchildren. He is predeceased by his son, Chris Craver, and brothers Bobby and Frank. A memorial service, with military honors, will be held at 2 pm on Wednesday, January 22, 2020 at Ocean Drive Presbyterian Church. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Veterans’ Welcome Home & Resource Center, 421 State Hwy 57 South, Little River, SC 29566. Tuesday, January 14 2020
