Happy New Year to all of our friends! We hate to see 2019 go because it was such an eventful year for us here at Flip Flop Live. We began this journey earlier in the year and the success and support that we've recieved has been much more than ever expected. To put the cherry on top the CBMA members awarded us the 2019 Michael Branch Award. Happy New Year and thank you for everything this past year and we can't wait to see what's in store for Flip Flop Live and Beach Music!
In a Facebook post today, Billy Darr (bassist) currently performing with Cat5 during Tuff's absence provided a postivie update to the fans and friends. From us here at Flip Flop Live, we're so happy to hear that he's doing better and we can't wait to see him back on stage. We had the pleasure of seeing Billy perform with Cat5 during the ECSC Fall Breeze event and he's doing a great job. In his post he mentioned " He sends his regards and wants everyone to know he will be back with Cat5 Band soon. He also wants to thank everyone for your prayers, text messages, cards and donations to help him and his family during this challenge in his life! God is great and in control".

In a post shared earlier today on Facebook, the North Carolina Museum of History will be unvailing a Beach Music Exhibit in May of 2020 that will run through January 2021. It's looks to feature items from: The Embers, Fantastic Shakers, Catalinas, Chairmen of the Board and the Band of Oz. The exhibit will be called: “Beach Music: Making Waves in North Carolina” and will include "six thematic sections that explore the genre, delving into what Beach Music is all about, the major hit-makers in the scene, and how it became a part of our regional identity." As we learn more we will be sure to update our news feed.
As many have noticed, Hugh "Tuff" Blanton hasn't been performing with Cat5 including the video we posted earlier this month. Tuff was diagnosed with cancerous tumor in his liver. A GoFundMe account has been setup to help offset the cost of medical expenses and if you're able to donate, it would be greatly appreciated. Tuff is a great person and we're so sorry to see him having to go through this. We've provided the GoFundMe information below.
In a post earlier tonight on the band's Facebook page they posted the following: "A Lot of people have been asking about the absence of Hugh "Tuff" Blanton our Bass Player. Take a look at the Go Fund Me Page created for him and help if you can. Our Brother needs your help if its nothing but sharing the page. Thank you for all you do and your support of this matter. - Much love to you from The Cat5 Band"
On the fundraising page it reads:
" Dear Cat5 Band Fans:
As many of you already know, Hugh “Tuff” Blanton has not been able to perform with the band lately due to health issues.
In October, Hugh was diagnosed with cancerous tumor in his liver. Surgery to remove the tumor is not an option. Instead, the treatment plan involves a 3 to 4 step radio embolization procedure. Radiation beads will be injected directly into the tumor to stop it from growing, to shrink it, and (hopefully) to destroy it. His doctors are confident in Hugh’s treatment plan and expect a positive outcome.
The medical costs associated with Hugh’s treatment are extensive. For this reason, we have set up a GoFundMe account to raise funds to help offset the financial burden to Hugh and his family resulting from his medical treatment. The Cat5 Band is asking our family of friends and fans to make monetary donations to support our much loved Hugh and his family in their time of need.
Your prayers and financial support will be greatly appreciated. God bless and thank you. We also ask that you give him and his family some privacy for just a bit so he can put all his energy towards getting healthy and getting back to doing what he loves.

In October we launched an online Beach Music auction on our website that was hosted by the Cindy Hite Memorial Golf Tournament in Clarksville, Virginia. Dale Hite from the Lake Live Live Concert Series approached us about participating and of course we were all in. In addition to the online auction they also hosted a silent auction, golf tournament and concert afterwards with J.B. and the Get Down Browns on October 18th and 19th at the Kinderton Country Club in Clarksville, Virginia.
It was announced that proceeds for this event totaled over $70,000 for the weekend event and all going to the Mecklenburg County Cancer Association. This event was started by members of the Hite family to honor Cindy who passed from cancer in 2011. The Clarksville and Southside, Virginia residents have such giving hearts and they also happen to be tremendous Beach Music fans with their concert series growing year after year.
Thank you to everyone that participated in the event, all of the businesses and entertainers who donated items for the auctions and for the volunteers who gave their time. This is an annual event and we hope to be part of this great event in 2020.
Earlier tonight it was announced that Jackie Gore's contribution to the Steve Hardy tribute CD would be his take on the Jerry Butler hit, "Dream Merchant". The song was produced by Freddy Tripp and Chris Biehler for the project. The song made it's debut on Steve Hardy's Original Beach Party and you can also hear Jackie's interview in the video below. Also for more informaiton on how you can help Steve's family along with the original announcement on this special project, click here!
The first single from their tenth studio album which is set to be released in 2020 already has fans talking. "Her Love is Killin' Me" has the traditional Huey Lewis flair and is sure to recieve chart action in the coming motnhs. Now available on streaming services and with your favorite DJ's and stations be sure to call and request it. Personally we love their music and we've already add it to our own playlists. Check it below and let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Earlier today, October 14, 2019 the Carolina Beach Music Academy announced on their Facebook page that the deadline for your ballot to be postmarked would be extended until tomorrow, October 15, 2019 due to the closure of post offices in observance of Columbus Day. After forty-five years, the one and only Steve Hardy will tentatively retiring. He's been on the air since April of 1974 and he grew up "listening to groups like the Four Tops and the Tempations" according to his biography on Facebook. Steve's show, Steve Hardy's Original Beach Party "is the longest-running beach music radio show on the air." His show airs every Sunday from 5:00 - 10:00 PM on WNCT FM 107.9. Not only over the airwaves but over the years you could find Steve taking his show on the road to various venues and events throughout the East Coast.
During the Sunday, October 13, 2019 show, Steve, his son Britt and wife Hope announced Steve's retirement and released information on an upcoming CD, "Party For a Lifetime" that will feature a host of artists and bands performing some of Steve's favorite songs throughout the years. Britt credited Craig Woolard from the Embers in orchestrating the lineup. Craig also called in to talk about the project and once released, all proceeds from the sale of the CD's will go to Steve and the family. He mentioned how so many people were willing to donate their time as well as services to complete the album. One of the artists that will be included is Mark Black from the East Coast Party Band. His contribution is on the Jackie Wilson classic, "Whispers" (Gettin' Louder), which was also recorded and released by the Isley Brothers. Mark's version is sure to get chart action as he did a great job as always. The song is currently available for purchase on iTunes and all proceeds will also go to Steve and the Family. You can view the promo below!
Every year people look forward to Steve's annual Christmas event called the "Thanks for Listening Christmas Party" which hosts several bands, free food and a Christmas toy drive for the Toys for Tots organization. His wife Hope mentioned during the show on Sunday that the 2019 Christmas party would probably be Steve's last appearance at the event. Everyone is invited but you must have a ticket to attend. In lieu of the toy drive, they're accepting donations this year to help with medical expenses and Steve's retirement. Tickets will be distrubuted to the local sponsors around the first of November. The current lineup for the party includes: The Mighty Saints of Soul, Band of Oz, Steve Owens and Summertime, Main Event Band and other special guests. Tickets and sponsor information will be announced soon!
Keep the family in your prayers! We're more than happy to offer our services in helping anyway possible here at Flip Flop Live.

On Tuesday, September 24, 2019 the Envision Band members were travelling when another car rear-ended one of the band vehicles causing it turn spin and flip multiple times before coming to rest on the opposite side of Interstate 40. You will find the entire story below from WXII NBC Channel 12.
The accident could've easily ended differently and we're certainly happy to hear that all members are okay with the exception of of a few who suffered some injuries. Our prayers go out to each of you for complete healing and we know this was a scary night for all involved. Envision will perform on Friday, November 8, 2019 during the CBMA weekend so make plans to see them.
The well-known North Carolina band Envision performed Tuesday night in Mount Airy in front of dozens of fans. But it's what you can't see or hear that motivated the band.
Over the weekend, Envision was on the way back from a gig close to Raleigh when they were blindsided by another car.
"Someone out of nowhere at what seemed to be 100 miles per hour just came and rear-ended us. We spun and we flipped multiple times," Envision front man, Michael Thomas said.
As if that wasn't bad enough, they landed on the opposite side of interstate 40.
"Once we settled from flipping, boom, another car hit us. It was a second impact," Thomas said.
Amazingly, Thomas only had minor cuts and bruises, the guitarist had a bruised elbow and the most serious damage was to their saxophone player, with a broken ankle.
"We're just blessed. We are 150 percent blessed," he said.
Not only did the band members somehow survive this crash, they were back to doing what they love just three days later and didn't skip a beat.
Thomas knows how lucky his band is and says has a different outlook on life now.
"I have stitches, scratches and a bruised knee. I'll take it compared to what the other outcome should've been," he said.
The one thing he wants to make sure is heard is that he thinks there was a higher power watching over his band that night.
"I'm going to tell as many people as I can what God did for us that night," he said.
We'd like to say congratulations to all of the nominees for the 2019 CBMA Awards! Great job by Mike Worley and Chad Sain and thanks to 94.9FM The Surf and Riptide Radio for making the live stream available to those not in the N. Myrtle Beach area today. Also thanks to Bo GIlbert for updating the Surf Facebook page and for compiling the list. We can't wait to see everyone in November, we love our Beach Music family!

On September 11, 2019, Delbert McClinton received the Americana Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance. An article published on the Music Row website reads:
"Nobody knows how to light up the stage quite like multi-Grammy winner Delbert McClinton, who will be receiving the 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award for Performance. From his early bands The Straitjackets and The Rondels to his current iteration with the Self-Made Men + Dana, he continues to sell out concert halls coast to coast. Following his rise as a prominent figure in the flourishing Texas music scene of the mid-‘70s and ‘80s, McClinton’s impact ultimately expanded beyond state lines. The roots music veteran began his highly lauded career as a professional harmonica player before becoming a formative artist who has since recorded award-winning as well as chart-topping works, including his funk-inflected staple “Giving It Up for Your Love” (1980). McClinton has graced many distinguished stages throughout the last six decades, lending his palpable energy and dynamic stage presence to performances on Saturday Night Live and Austin City Limits, to name a few. As Lyle Lovett lovingly puts it, “If we could all sing like we want to, we’d all sound like Delbert McClinton.”
Congratulations on a well deserved award, we love Delbert's music and his distinctive style and sound. You will find a few of his recordings below.
September 5, 2019 was the debut night for Coastline's newest member, Nick Campbell. Nick comes to Coastline from his time with Southern Rock legends, Lynyrd Skynyrd. According to Nick's Facebook page, he started with Skynyrd in 2011 until joining up with Coastline late in 2019.
Nick comes in replacing former drummer, Norman Allred who joined Coastline on April 16, 2019. We think a lot of Norman and as we're not sure of the reason of his departure but we're sure to see him soon. Norman was previously the drummer for the Shakers. To Nick we'd like to say welcome to the band we look forward to meeting you.

A new band to the Beach Music community but they've been entertaining for years. Straight from the Commonwealth of Virginia, they can be heard on stations throughout the region. JB and the Get Down Browns recently released their single "Lake Booty Shake" and many of your favorite stations and DJ's already have a copy. It's a great song and we appreciate the guys getting a copy to us and you'll want to be sure to call and request it. The song is a fun groove talking about Summer fun shaggin' at the lake and doing that "Lake Booty Shake".
The six piece band comes to us from Southside, Virginia and the members include:
Jeff Bailey - Vocals and Guitar David Snead - Vocals, Guitar, Synth Guitar Colby Bailey - Trumpet and Percussion Vernon Carter - Vocals and Drums Bill Brown - Vocals and Bass Brian Parks - Vocals, Harp, Saxophone and Guitar
Being from the same area ourselves, we've had the opportunity several times to hear the band and they put on a great show. From their stage setup, lighting show to the music, they know how to entertain. Their lineup also includes their sound engineer Chad Plemons and their lighting tech Clint Bailey.
You can catch them on Sunday, September 1, 2019 with the Embers featuring Craig Woolard at the Lake Life Live Concert Series in Clarksville, Virginia. Gates open at 3:00 PM and JB and the Get Down Browns will take the stage at 4:00 and the Embers at 7:00. Only $5.00 admission for an afternoon packed full of entertainment. For more information on this event, click here!
Be sure to call your favorite stations and DJ's and request "Lake Booty Shake" and we'd like to say congratulations to the guys on the release. The CBMA advises "If we have your correct email address on file then you should have received an email to nominate your favorites for the 2019 CBMA Awards. If you do not have an email address on file with us then a paper ballot will be mailed to your physical address".
Paper ballots were scheduled to start mailing on Monday, July 8, 2019 according to the email. The deadline to join and nominate is July 15, 2019. The deadline to join and vote is September 15, 2019.
We ask that you vote online if at all possible, but if you have a problem with the online voting you can submit a paper ballot. Please contact us at 843-280-9000 and we will make sure you get a paper ballot to send in via mail.
How do you know my ballot is valid?

What if I mess up on my ballot?

Every ballot is automatically submitted to Michael Teal CPA via email. He will validate all ballots with the member ID and secret code to confirm the totals that will be used to determine the winners this year.
Who can use this form to vote?

This past weekend, the East Coast RHythm and Blues Band released a new song titled: "Sunshine" and it features Kim Jones. The song currently isn't available for download but you can request it from your favorite Beach Music DJ and stations. Eventually the song will make it's way to YouTube according to the band and we will of course let you know once it has been uploaded.
One of the hotspots in N. Myrtle Beach is under new ownership. The new owner's Dwayne and Robin Porter said "we're not here to change it, we're here to hopefully make it better" as you'll hear in the video below from The Sun News. If you visit the Duck's website you'll see the entertainment lineup they feature seven days a week. Several bands and/or entertainers were booked prior to the sale of the business. There was also mention of their plans to continue with the SOS (Society of Standers) events as in previous years.
In the article found on Myrtle Beach Online by Alan Blondin you'll read where they talked about not changing what makes Duck's what it is.: “We’ve got such a wide range of age groups here,” Dwayne said. “The older group is what made Duck’s what it is, and we try to cater to that, but during that time we have to make sure we’re entertaining the younger group, the tourist group and everybody that comes to North Myrtle Beach.”
Be sure to read the entire article at the link above as it details their plans and vision for Duck's.
Read more here: https://www.myrtlebeachonline.com/entertainment/article231998787.html#storylink=cpy
We're looking forward to the updates and changes planned and we can't to meet Dwayne and Robin during our next visit to N. Myrtle Beach. Be sure to welcome them to the Beach Music family and we'd like to officially say welcome from Flip Flop Live!

There was talk circulating throughout various social media channels over the weekend that the Catalinas welcomed a new member. After confirming this information with the band we’d like to help welcome Angela Resignalo to the band.
The Catalinas welcome our newest member, Angela Resignalo as a lead vocalist in our band!!! Angela is from Mt Airy, NC and was recently a star performer at the Rudy Theater in Selma, NC since 2006. Angela bring youth and energy to our stage and we are very excited about what the future has in store for us with Angela. Be listening and watching out for new recordings featuring her very soon!
The Catalinas began in 1957 and celebrates their 62 Anniversary in 2019! The bands popularity is based primarily in southeastern US, however, The Catalinas music is played on radio stations in the UK, Greece and Australia to name a few. Known for their quality, tight sound and energy onstage, they are one of the "in demand" groups for city festivals, weddings and private parties, always playing a variety of music that suits all ages. Though known for Beach Music, regionally and nationally for the mega hit "Summertime's Callin' Me", they play all styles to a high standard of excellence. "Summertime's Callin' Me" has become the anthem of North and South Carolina beach goers as they struggle through the winter waiting on summer to arrive.
Their latest CD, Dancin' Romancin', was nominated for "Album of the Year" at this year's Carolina Beach Music Awards. The CD was officially released August 18, 2015. It is available on CD Baby, Amazon and iTunes, and of course for sale at personal appearances. Several changes have happened recently within some of the most popular bands in the Beach Music industry and the latest was confirmed by David Hicks with the Band of Oz. In a Facebook post earlier this morning, May 11, 2019 David announced the addition of two new members; Chris Jennings and Dustin Ahkuoi.
Last month it was announced that guitarist, Jerry West would be leaving BOZ to pursue the formation of the newest band in Beach Music, "Cat 5". We had the opportunity to attend the Beach Music Cruise-in last night at the oceanfront in Virginia Beach, Virginia with BOZ including Jerry and as always, they did not disappoint. (Videos coming soon!)
David's Facebook post:
"Change is the only constant in life. I didn't come up with that. Some Greek guy from 2500 years ago did. They were called philosophers. They sat around all day in a bathrobe and came up with stuff like that to avoid getting a real job or going into battle like all the other men. Never the less the quote is very true. There are changes that we create and there are changes that are thrust upon us. We have to deal with change in the most positive way possible and I believe we have done that..As many of you that follow The Band of Oz have heard that change is coming to our band.Chris Jennings will be joining our band at the end of the month. I had to talk Chris into coming out of retirement. He is without a doubt one of the best players in the business. More to follow about Chris.
I met Dustin Ahkuoi about a year ago. I have stayed in touch with him trying to put something together in one way or another. We have finally made that work.. Dustin came out of the Atlanta show band circuit.. He is the most versatile singer I have ever worked with.. More about Dustin to follow. There is also more change coming to our business and that is the formation of the new group Cat 5. I have known some of those guys for over 30 years and I wish them much success.
Chris began playing guitar in his teens after being inspired by a friend's rock music collection. After moving through the ranks within the local band scene he landed the guitar position with a signed recording act and moved to Florida.Over the next 10 years Chris traveled all over the US and abroad with various acts before moving back home to the Carolinas. Throughout his his career Chris performed and recorded with many notable artists including Paul Davis,Nigel Olssen and The Righteous Brothers.Chris spent several years performing with The Fantastic Shakers..
Dustin was born and raised in Chapel Hill NC. From a very early age music and art have been a huge part of his life. His father who is from the island of American Samoa played instruments and sang in bands as well as in the home with Dustin almost everyday of his childhood. His mother is a poet and comes from a family of poets, painters.authors and musicians.
In 2003 Dustin moved to Atlanta to pursue his musical dreams and called Atlanta home for 15 years. While in Atlanta Dustin worked full time in the music industry for over a decade. He has traveled the US and internationally with successful bands that have opened for acts such as Usher. Pitbull,Sister Sledge. Jason Derulo,Blondie and many more. He has been honored to perform for former first lady Michelle Obama and share the stage with Kix Brooks of Brooks and Dunn and Brian Littrell of the Backstreet Boys.He has also released viral comedic videos that have amassed millions of views on You Tube and Facebook.
Dustin recently moved back to Chapel Hill to be nearer to his family and has loved reconnecting with his North Carolina roots. He is beyond excited and deeply honored to join the legendary Band of Oz.Dustin spent every one of his childhood summers in the Outer Banks of NC so the Carolina beach is embedded deep in his heart. He is looking forward to sharing the stage with BOZ and connecting with all of you through the gift of music!"
We will of course update you with any new information released by the band. Be sure to like us on Facebook and join our mailing for the latest in Beach Music news and events.

Earlier today, Steve Owens and Summertime announced the addition of their newest
member, Ben Shaw on trumpet. Ben performed previously during the first year after
the formation of SOaS as well as filling in at various events throughout the years
according to the Facebook post from the band. Their post also mentioned that Ben

Holiday Band and others". In a statement Ben said: "It feels good to be back with
Steve Owens and Summertime ... it feels like family".

**Photo property of the James Michael Brown Band**
The James Michael Brown Band has released a new single titled: "A Love Thang". It's
currently available on iTunes as well as their online store. Also available on various
stations you can request the song with your favorite DJ's and radio stations. You can
take a listen on the WDZD 99.1 FM Facebook page with Eric Bowman!
On a recent post by Michael Roberts on his page "I'll Go Where the Music Takes Me"
he says: "This track is a solid groove with an awesomely smooth flavor that just reaches
out and says “Let’s Party”. Contemporary in sound and production. The lyric has a natural
hook with the repetition of the title which just pulls you in. Pair this with a strong rhythm
and vocal track and you have a winner.
Technical engineering involves the use of vocal stacking, a little reverb, a voice box and
several other very nice techniques which makes this one a winner. Plus Instead of having
the typical instrumental bridge the instrumentation ( a great Sax) is positioned in the last
30 or so seconds and it just rocks.
On The “Ole Give It To Mikey, He’ll Play It Rating Scale” This one is way up there. That’s
right it is a solid A+. The reason being it’s a contemporary sound that works for multiple
levels of dancers. It is very well engineered and produced with its multiple levels and lastly,
the performance is exceptional. High energy paired with vocal clarity makes this one the
winner it is.
I believe this one you will want to add to your collection. It should be available on CDBaby,
Itunes and other retail sources. Be sure to check it out.
Until Next Time…..
Keep On Dancin’…"
" You can visit Michael's page for all of his reviews here!
You can download your copy today on iTunes or on the Band's Store!

we can certainly say that the 2019 Cabin Fever Throwdown fundraiser was a success and
we're so happy that we were able to be there for the event and we're already looking forward
to 2020.

Sadly we received news from Hopewell, Virginia earlier this morning. The Hopewell Moose Lodge 1472
was a total loss from a fire that started in the early morning hours. Thankfully no employees or lodge
members were inside of the structure and no injuries were reported.
The Hopewell Moose has supported their community for years through various events along with supporting
the Beach Music community. They've hosted various bands throughout the years along with the Central VA
Junior Shaggers.
If we receive further information we will be sure to update you on that. Our thoughts and prayers are with
the lodge members, their families and those affected within the community by this sad news.
March is upon us and that means you will begin to see all of the outdoor Summer series schedules posted.
We've added several to our calendar already including:
Alive at Five in Morehead City, NC
Downtown Clayton in Clayton, NC
Lake Life Live in Clarksville, VA
Mount Holly Concert Series in Mount Holly, NC
Music on Main in N. Myrtle Beach, SC
Ragapple Lassie Vineyard - Boonville, NC
Sunset Sounds in South Hill, VA
More venues, festivals, concerts and series will be added shortly. As soon as we know, we will make sure
you're updated so be sure to check back often as we receive information daily.
Yesterday we travelled down to Raleigh for the 2019 Cabin Fever Throwdown. There
was a great turnout this year including: fans, shaggers, DJ's and bands. If you missed
it, you surely missed an awesome day. We enjoyed performances by Steve Owens and
Summertime, Band of Oz, The Embers featuring Craig Woolard along with Jim Quick and
Coastline as they closed out the evening.
We've posted a few videos on our Facebook page but we will be including a lot more
video from Sunday afternoon and the clips will be available on our Facebook page,
YouTube channel and Vimeo. We also received several compliments on our new
endeavor from several we ran into throughout the day and we can't thank you
enough for the kind words. We're working to make FFL your easy to navigate portal
to EVERYTHING, Beach Music and we can only do that with the help of all of you
in the Beach Music Community!
Last Summer we came up with the idea for Flip Flop Live and we've worked hard trying
to think about every aspect of what we'd like to see within FFL. What is it the bands and
artists need, how can we help the DJ's, what about the shaggers and beach music fans?
With such a dedicated community of people, the industry needed a dedicated source to
bring all of the information together in one place that will be kept current, is easy to
navigate and is supportive of all areas of beach music.
We present to you "Flip Flop Live"! Over the next few months we will be gradually making
changes, adding new features and we will be listening for your feedback. Join our mailing
list, like and follow us on Facebook and our various social media outlets. We will provide
opportunities to receive your thoughts, suggestions and overall satisfaction with our
service.
